The Sun, The Mountain, and Me - Review

This is a show that seemed RIGHT up my alley. An airy, mysterious but thoughtful title that already evokes emotion with the image of a painter looking deep in thought. I was expecting a complex, self contemplative piece that would leave us in tears.

The show features an excellent performance from the lead actor, playing a painter who is going through a crisis that leads to a full breakdown. His life is crumbling, and his art is stagnant. He becomes obsessed with the story of Icarus.

The set is expressive and has playful uses of paintings of people's faces to represent different characters. Additionally, feathers as paint and dropping paintbrushes to represent lighter fluid being poured.

The problems are in the imbalance. The piece is overly dramatic with no relief. The actor attempts two jokes, which both fell incredibly flat.

He also retells the story of Icarus, one that is too well known that the big reveals of the story too falls flat.

It takes itself much too seriously, with the character trying so desperately hard to matter, and the piece ends up doing exactly the same.
