Seven Circus Shows, Because I Realized I Haven't Posted Any Circus Shows, At Edinburgh Fringe 2024

Ghost Light: Between Fall and Flight

Remember seesaws/teeter-totters? Well this duo do too, and decided they needed to be more badass.

From the description: "Featuring a blend of breathtaking acrobatic feats and poignant choreography, Ghost Light takes a deep look into the synergy of two highly skilled performers. The teeterboard propels them toward each other in the euphoria of flight, accompanied by the levity of weightlessness and the fatality of the inevitable fall."

Aug 3-11, 13-18, 20-24

Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows - The Lafayette

16:00 - 17:00

YOAH

I just realized I've never seen circus work from Japan, and I feel like I am MISSING OUT. A society that values discipline and getting things exactly right must make an incredible circus show. From the description: "Japan’s most talked about contemporary circus company make their UK premiere with YOAH. Cirquework’s new style of circus fuses jaw-dropping physicality with breathtaking digital visual effects and electro sound to create an unmissable Japanese circus experience!" Aug 2-5, 7-11, 13-18

Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows - The Lafayette

20:40 - 21:40

Rollercoaster

One of my favorite finds of this Fringe so far. I mean, just read this description: "Ultra-modern pop-punk juggling! Surrounded by a huge inflatable blue structure and accompanied by electro beats composed of distorted rollercoaster sounds, Peden shares his cutting-edge tricks inspired by corkscrews, adrenaline and high-tech seatbelts. The show features a four-meter transparent tube making balls spiral around Wes' body, contemporary spinning-plate rituals, epic three-ball disco juggling and invisible seatbelts providing the safety to perform some of the most difficult juggling ever done on stage!" Jul 31, Aug 1-6, 8-12, 14-19, 21-26

Assembly Roxy - Central

17:00 - 18:00

N.Ormes

This show was at Fringe 2023 and returns to Edinburgh Fringe 2024. I heard nothing but great things but couldn't fit it into my schedule, but I'm excited to have another shot! From the description: "Skilfully combining acrobatics and dance, we follow our two protagonists and their relationship, navigating between complicity and power struggles. Come witness this inspiring journey to see how the exchange of roles and acrobatics blurs our preconceptions!" Jul 31, Aug 1-6, 8-13, 15-20, 22-25

Assembly Roxy - Upstairs

17:15 - 18:15

IIIII – About the Art of Letting Go

The Cyr Wheel is a circus classic. It's that giant hula-hoop performers put their entire bodies on. So, I LOVE the idea of mixing it with an emotional journey. This feels SO Fringe! From the description: "Contemporary circus, dance and sound art weave a personal and emotional journey through the beauty and pain of letting go! At the centre: the Cyr wheel. Powerful, stirring, fragile. Hanschitz and Beierer surrender to the process of letting go. The mood changes between calm balance, loss of control and floating lightness."

Underbelly’s Circus Hub on the Meadows - The Beauty

11:00 - 11:50

Of the Land on Which We Meet

This title could represent a hard hitting Summerhall drama, but instead, it's a hard hitting cirus piece! Fro the description: "Walking on stone and cement, it can be hard to remember what it feels like to have earth beneath our feet. Na Djinang circus hopes to re-discover a connection we once had. Following the journey of three contemporary Australian circus artists with distinct relationships to their land; an indigenous Australian, a descendant of migrants and a descendant of colonial settlers."

Aug 1-6, 8-11, 13-18, 20-25

Assembly Checkpoint - Assembly Checkpoint

17:30 - 18:30

Circus Baobab: Yé!

From the description: "Showcasing incredible acrobatics, vertiginous human pyramids, hand-to-hand combat and contortions all performed in a frenetic rhythm."

So I had to look up frenetic: Frenetic - fast and energetic in a rather wild and uncontrolled way.
