5 Shows that Will Ruin (Or Maybe Improve) Your Childhood at Edinburgh Fringe 2024

Some shows at Edinburgh Fringe 2024 play on what we have known for all of our life: kids shows, books, and toys. This year is no different!

Confessions of a Teletubby

The Teletubbies were kids show royalty for the longest time in the late 90's, early 2000s both in the UK, US and around the world. However, I think we all knew there was some crazy stuff going on in that set, and especially in that writers room (what the f**k were they on when writing it?). We now one is breaking her silence! From the description:

Arguments and poo! Sex and swearing! Blood, sweat, tears and giant rabbits! Life on the set of Teletubbies might not have been quite as you imagined… Nikky Smedley played LaaLaa (the yellow one) in the original series of Teletubbies for six years. Nic Sampson: Yellow Power Ranger

Following 2022's critical darling "Marathon, 1904", Kiwi Actor and Comedian Nic Sampson is back with an hour on a topic he knows very well, his experience as the children's icon, the Yellow Power Ranger. Although not the one we usually think of (Trini with her Sabertooth Tiger), but instead the 14th season of the show entitled "Power Rangers Mystic Force". Although the show isn't well known by the mainstream, it is very well known to fans who grew up with the series and he continues to do Comic Cons and events around the world with his cast. "He will be presenting an imagined version of himself many years on from the show, desperately trying to organise a reunion with his fellow power rangers and clinging to the scraps of stardom at bleak comic conventions." - Avalon Comedy description

Dr Dolittle Kills a Man (and Reads Extracts From His New Book)

This is the show I LIVE for at Fringe! Just outlandish and ridiculous on existing IP. Sure, you can call it "parody" but shows like these are so much more. They go to the line of parody, and then build a house over that line. Excited for this one!

From the description: "You've seen him on Countryfile, Blue Peter and that episode of Springwatch that the BBC have tried to scrub (scrub!) from the internet. Now, join Dr John Dolittle, PhD (yours truly and the very same), as he thrills with an animal adventure from yesteryear – before the fame, before the fortune, before they took away his OBE."

Barbara (and Kenneth)

With the popularity of the film, it is no surprise that Barbie-themed Fringe shows will blow up this year and next, and one that seems to be doing it right is Barbara (and Kenneth), a new musical from USA based Deanna Giulietti. From the description: "Barbara’s taking the stage to tell you what it’s like to work over 100 jobs, compete at the Olympics, run for president, and navigate through decades of life in the spotlight. Featuring original songs (and Kenneth). This show covers topics such as: why it's okay to have boobs, the first female US presidential candidate, finding love (and Vegemite) in Australia, not apologizing for being true to oneself, and much more in just 50 minutes." Aug 2-10, 12-17 Greenside @ George Street - Forest Theatre 11:30 - 12:20

Rory Cargill: Television 1

I saw this last year at Edinburgh Fringe when it was a two-piece and the absolute beauty of it was the strength of it's incredibly high quality multimedia portions. They recreated classic BBC bumpers and included themselves in it and even made sharp animation, mixed in with their live sketches. I am not sure how it will play as a one-man show, but I am excited to see! The show parodies british TV including BBC and Channel 4 throughout the years and many of the parodies are broad enough for international audiences to still relate to and enjoy. Highly recommend!
